Dr Larteque Lawson MBBS, MRCPsych. is a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. He holds post graduate qualifications in Forensic Psychotherapy from UCL/Tavistock & Portman Clinic, London. Dr Lawson is approved under Section 12 as a Mental Health Assessor under the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards Legislations (DOLS). He is also approved under the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended in 2007).
Dr Lawson is on the GMC Specialist Register as a Dual Accredited Specialist in both Psychiatry of Learning Disabilities and Forensic Psychiatry. He has worked as a Consultant Psychiatrist since 2000 and since 2005 he has been working with people with learning difficulties and autism (with or without mental illness). Dr Lawson has had a successful medico legal practice since 2000.
Currently and in addition, to his private medico legal work, Dr Lawson also works in the NHS as a Consultant Psychiatrist, looking after more than a hundred patients with learning disability and autism in the community. He also has patients on an Assessment and Treatment Unit. Dr Lawson has daily contact with people with learning disabilities and autism and provides consultant support and advice, to a multidisciplinary team of doctors, psychologist, nurses, speech and language therapists, occupational therapist and other professionals. Prior to his current work in the community, Dr Lawson was a Consultant Psychiatrist working in medium and low secure psychiatric services.
Since 2000, Dr Lawson has provided specialist independent psychiatric reports in complex cases to Court of Protection, Crown Courts, Local Authorities across England, Solicitors, the Care Quality Commission (CQC), Mental Health Tribunals, NHS and Independent Health Sector, The Ministry of Justice (Offenders Management Unit/Prison Services and the Department of Education. I am a Medical Member of North England Approval Panel (scrutiny and approval of applications for Section 12 Approved status).
Dr Lawson is on The UK Register of Experts and a member of the Expert Witness Institute
My academic activities include training and education of professionals in relation to Capacity Assessments (including in specialist areas such as capacity to consent to sexual relations and marriage and testamentary capacity among other areas. He also provides training to other professionals in relation to the Mental Capacity Act/DOLS, The Deprivation of Liberty Safeguard legislations , Mental Health Act and on Risk assessment and Management in relation to mental disorders in people with learning disabilities and/or autism. I am a Royal College of Psychiatrists recognised Clinical and Educational Supervisor for medical students, psychiatric trainees and other clinicians. Dr Lawson supervise and/or provide training for medical students, psychiatric trainees, physician associates, and nursing students. He also supports training of Consultant Psychiatrists/Mental Health Assessors, Best Interest Assessors and Community Care Providers.
